Eyelash extensions in the summer

Summer is a peak season for eyelash extensions. The humidity in the working area may vary greatly during summer time. This may lead to unfortunate retention problems if attention is not paid to the humidity level. These problems can be avoided completely by taking the effort to understand what is the cause for them.

Eyelash adhesives and humidity

Eyelash adhesives intended for professional use are different forms of cyanoacrylate based adhesives. A common factor for all cyanoacrylates is that they cure by moisture. This post explains how LashLovers® eyelash extension adhesives reach to changes in humidity level.

Setting time of eyelash adhesives

Lash stylists often ask whether a specific adhesive is "fast setting". This refers to the setting time of adhesive once the individual eyelash extension (or volume fan) has been dipped in the adhesive and placed on the natural lash. It is impossible to provide an unambiguos answer as setting time is influenced by two variables:

1. Dosage of eyelash adhesive
2. Humidity of work space

If more adhesive is dosed, the setting time of adhesive is relatively longer. The higher the humidity in the working area, the faster the setting time of eyelash adhesives.

All LashLovers® eyelash extension adhesives are designed to be fast and smooth to work with, without at the same time being too fast setting.  Too fast setting time may lead to the adhesive curing partially on the individual eyelash extension prior to being placed on the natural lash. This will cause the adhesive bond between the extension and natural lash to be a mere surface bond and will usually lead to premature falling off of eyelash extensions. It is of outmost importance that the adhesive is able to penetrate the natural lash in order to create a lasting and durable adhesive bond.

ACE eyelash extension adhesive

ACE eyelash extension adhesive is a medical cyanoacrylate based adhesive. ACE is fast setting and works well even in work space with relatively low humidity (ca. 30%). The setting time of ACE get noticeably faster as the relative humidity level increases. If attention is not paid to this matter, retention problems may start to appear when humidity is 50%-60%. However, in the hands of an experienced eyelash extension professional with fast application skills and an increased adhesive dosage, ACE remains workeable even in 70% humidity. The optimal humidity level for ACE is 30%-70%.

Glue of my life - Fast setting eyelash extension adhesive

Glue of my life - fast setting eyelash extension adhesive is an ethyl cyanoacrylate based eyelash adhesive with a rather liquid-like composition. It does not react to changes in humidity very easily, but rather only becomes slower to work with if humidity level in work space is low. The adhesive also has very good tolerance for other chemicals (some chemicals may thicken easily if there are e.g. hair dying chemicals in the air of the work space). The optimal humidity level for Glue of my life - Fast setting eyelash extension adhesive is 40%-65%.

Glue of my life - new edition

Glue of my life - new edition is an ethyl cyanoacrylate based adhesive with a slightly higher viscosity than that of Glue of of life - Fast setting eyelash extension adhesive. When the relative humidity level rises above 65% the adhesive thickens faster in a glue ring or glue pad. Then it is recommended to replace the adhesive with a fresh drop right away as thickened adhesive is not able to penetrate the natural eyelash effectively. The adhesive does not tolerate hair dying chemicals as well as Glue of of life - Fast setting eyelash extension adhesive and may react to them by thickening. The optimal humidity level for Glue of my life - new edition is 40%-65%.

No Panic - medical grade eyelash adhesive

No Panic - medical grade eyelash adhesive is the no. 1 choice of many lash stylists due to its sensitive yet durable nature. It is a medical cyanoacrylate based, gel-like adhesive. No Panic thickens easily if relative humidity in the work space is higher than 65% and its setting time gets noticeably longer if relative humidity is below 40%. No Panic reacts to some hair salon chemicals by thickening easily. A thin film or tiny white chrystals may appear in the adhesive in a glue ring as it sets too fast when coming in contact with other chemicals. If there are other chemicals in the air of work space, it may even become impossible to work with No Panic. The optimal humidity level for No Panic - medical grade eyelash adhesive is 40%-65%.

Adjusting the humidity of work space

It is of outmost importance for a lash stylist to undertand the effects of relative humidity on the behaviour of adhesives. The relative humidity may vary up to tens of percentages within one day. Therefore it is adviceable to have a humidity meter in the work space.

Dehumidifier

If humidity in the work space is too high, it is recommended to purchase a dehumidifier. It collects moisture from the surrounding air and helps maintain the working conditions stable during summer time to ensure that adhesive does not set too fast and thus to avoid durability and retention problems.

Humidifier

If humidity in the work space is very low (usually during winter), it is recommended to purchase a humidifier. It helps to adjust and maintain the relative humidity level of work space in an optimal level to ensure reasonable setting time and smooth working pace.

Tips for working with eyelash extensions in the summer

1. Change adhesive drops to fresh ones more frequently than usually.

2. If you notice thickening of adhesive, change adhesive drops to fresh ones immediately.

3. Store you eyelash adhesive bottle in a Stay Fresh Bag.

4. Do not store LashLovers® eyelash extension adhesives in a refrigerator or in a cool place. Store adhesive bottles in room temperature, away from light.

5. Instruct your customers to come to their lash appointment with clean lashes and consult them on the importance of daily maintenance and cleansing of eyelash extensions.
